Portable Generators

Posted by admin On June - 7 - 2010Comments Off

Here it is the beginning of June and this is the beginning of hurricane season. We are already getting reports of deadly tropical storms, tornado’s that have killed several and unfortunately the worst has yet to come.
Are you prepared? Do you have all the supplies you need to survive in the event of a major catastrophe? One thing that is not on a lot of emergency kit lists are portable generators, and they very well should be. What if you have an infant who has breathing issues and needs the medical device a nebulizer? What if you have a family member that requires constant oxygen and needs electricity to operate it? What if you have a family of friend who has kidney disease and requires dialysis at home? These are worst case scenarios of course, but there are other issues where energy could be very needed.

Where there are storms there are power outages, and these power outages do not simply last a few hours. When devastation hit, it completely destroys power lines, transformers leaving you without power for days, weeks, even months. In the meantime, your perishable foods have spoiled, you may be hot if it is summer, cold if it is winter, cell phone is dead,no entertainment for the family, using flashlights are fun for the firts 2 hours or so but after that it becomes a pain.

Portable generators supply energy when energy is not available. The generators come in all shapes and sizes to fit your specific needs. Should you need power for your whole home to maintain normalcy you will need a higher wattage generator, if you just want a couple of things running you can get away with a 1000 watt portable generator. Another thing to consider when making your purchase is not only how many watts you will need, but what type of fuel you want to use. You can get the regular portable generators that utilize regular unleaded gasoline, or you can get the portable generators that utilize propane. The choices are up to you, but keep in mind that you will need to refill these portable generators for the duration of the outage. So you have to keep in mind do you have storage space for several gas cans, or do you have a cool area to store propane?

Having food and water is essential as well as first aid kits, candles, batteries and so forth. What is normalcy worth to you if you have 3 screaming kids that are bored because they can’t play their video games, or watch their favorite movies, or listen to their favorite music? What is normalcy worth if regardless of hurricane, tornado, earthquake, blizzard, tsunami you have a presentation to prepare for, or your cell phone is dead and you can’t get service because signals are down you can use your land line phone but you have a cordless phone that needs electricity to operate? How much is saving your food, taking a hot shower, washing your clothes, running air or heat, cooking regular meals and not relying on MRE’s for your source of food when you have perfectly good food in your refrigerator and freezer.
It is only a small initial investment, that is a lifetime of comfort knowing that you can keep things running smoothly in your home.
